With actual battles in Iraq and Afghanistan plus shadow operations all over the world it is easy to forget that places like grandpa’s farm could easily become the next scene in the War on Terrorism.

Think about it for a second, most Americans take their food for granted but without the plethora of food the American economy and culture would nose-dive overnight. The average farm is right off the road and the only security is a barbed wire fence meant more to mark property than defend against intruders. What better target for terrorists? A simple spraying of bacteria on a vegetable could kill dozens of people and frighten many more before the infection could be traced back to ground zero. One shot into a cow could cause a pandemic that would rival the worse of Britain’s mad cow outbreaks.

Strange Maps

I just found a wonderful new map blog called Strange Maps thanks to Metafilter. Great stuff!

Fly Like an Eagle

Picture 28.png

Jake started off the morning today by posting a link in our irc channel to this new game called Wings. It’s sort of like the Google Earth flight simulator, except you can poo-bomb the landscape by pressing the space bar. (Remember that cafe in Paris where the waiter was so dang rude. Now is your chance for revenge.) Tasteless, yes, but fun. It uses Google maps satellite imagery.

Exotic Maps

I just noticed a new all-Russian map today. It’s called Коды охоты “Шпионские страсти”. Any Russian speakers out there?

We also had a Finnish map recently called Forde. A Finnish friend told me that all the entries on this map seem to be people’s homes.

Cool New MapKits

Today I noticed what I think might be my favorite use of MapKit so far: Rate my Station.

The idea is that instead of being slaves to saving a couple extra cents off a gallon of gasoline, we should be considering the overall quality of the businesses where we get our fuel. So go on the site and add your favorite (and least favorite) local gas stations.

Taxi Mapper is another exciting new map site to watch. Cabbies are invited to add their favorite places to grab a bite to eat (they always know the best spots), their good stories, and whatever else they want to share.
